Finnish riders have completed more than 900 km – close to halfway
While the Team Rynkeby project is currently starting its first official stage, riders from Team Rynkeby – God Morgon Oulu have already put more than 900 km behind them.
Stage 1, Lübeck: Not many of the riders on the four Finnish teams, Team Rynkeby – God Morgon Jyväslylä, Oulu, Vaasa and Espoo, really managed to experience the facilities of the modern Radisson Blu Senator Hotel, where they stayed last night.
The hotel, located down at the canal overlooking Lübeck’s Old Town, was shrouded in darkness as the participants from the four Finnish teams arrived at 23:00 last night.
The teams had, prior to arrival, been on the road for more than 24 hours with the ferry from Helsinki to Travëmunde, and before participants could finally hit the sack, they first had to put in 20 km of cycling from the ferry berth to Lübeck’s city centre in the warm summer evening.
Many of the riders would not get to bed until the wrong side of midnight.
But despite the late arrival and lack of sleep, the first riders were in the breakfast room at 06:00 in high spirits.
“We have more than 200 km awaiting us in the saddle today, so our captains would like us to get away early. And after a day on the ferry, where we didn’t do much besides eating and relaxing, the riders are also absolutely ready to go,” says Kirsi Pärssinen, Country Manager for Team Rynkeby – God Morgon Finland and rider on the Espoo team, which was the first team to leave the hotel at 06:45.
Completed 900 km
The other three Finnish teams took things a little more calmly. The participants at Team Rynkeby – God Morgon Oulu have gradually developed a good routine with checking in and out of hotels.
For the majority of the team’s participants, the first official stage of the tour is in fact their eighth stage.
Twenty-five of the team’s 34 riders on Team Rynkeby – God Morgon Oulu started in Santa’s hometown of Rovaniemi on the Arctic Circle last Saturday, and they have steadily cycled their way down through Finland to Helsinki.
“We have cycled around 920 km, so we are actually nearing halfway to Paris,” says Juha Salminen, who is a neighbour to Santa Claus and therefore had him send off the team from Rovaniemi.
“Yes, it’s true. I have Santa’s mobile number, so I can connect with him if problems occur along the way,” he smiles.
