3-year-old Laura died of cancer – her parents cheer on Team Rynkeby in Belgium

This text has been translated from Danish into English by AdHoc Translations.nt scenes took place at Mur de Huy in Belgium earlier today, when the parents of 3-year-old Laura, who died of cancer in the spring, turned up to cheer on the Team Rynkeby cyclists who are now on their way to Paris.

Stage 5, Mur de Huy: It was just the captains from Team Rynkeby Øresund who were aware that Lasse and Maiken Piester-Stolpe were standing on the legendary Ardennes hill, Mur de Huy, in Belgium earlier today when the charity cycling team arrived.

Lasse and Maiken Piester-Stolpe lost their 3-year-old daughter Laura this past March to DIPG (Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma), an extremely rare form of cancer.

It was just six months after Laura, together with her mother, father and older brother, were in Ringe on Funen on behalf of the Danish Child Cancer Foundation to accept the nearly DKK 22 million that Team Rynkeby raised last year.

Lasse’s cousin, Liselotte Hammer, is a cyclist on Team Rynkeby Øresund, and she was one of the people that Lasse and Maiken had travelled to Belgium to cheer on, along with their five-year-old son, Mathias.

They gave us a push
For Lasse and Maiken, it was important to come to Belgium to thank the Team Rynkeby cyclists for the support they provided throughout Laura’s illness and treatment.

“The entire team supported us ever since Laura was diagnosed with the brain tumour, and it’s just been amazing. Every time I see something with Team Rynkeby Øresund, I get tears in my eyes because they are so selfless and it’s been so wonderful that they have dedicated the whole year to Laura. We would have loved Laura to be standing here wearing the same T-shirts as us, but it was not to be,” says Lasse Piester-Stolpe.

”They have given us the feeling that we’ve got backup and a safety net that has helped push us forward. Just as we’ve given them a little push over the last few metres today, they’ve given us a push over the course of the year,” adds Maiken.

Poignant scenes
The family went down the hill a few hundred metres to meet the cyclists and cheer them on for the last stretch.

And as can be seen in the video below, it was an emotional moment when Liselotte Hammer took the last bend on the hill and discovered the family standing there.

Laura was diagnosed with the extremely rare form of cancer, DIPG, which affects only one or two Danish children a year.

Shortly after her diagnosis, Laura began radiation treatment and underwent experimental treatment at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen.

But at the end of October, the family was informed that Laura’s tumour had begun to grow again, and Laura was taken out of the experimental treatment.

Laura passed away on 28 March 2019 – she was just three years old.
